The Priests would enter on the Day of Atonement to sprinkle blood on the mercy seat. This represented the the forgiveness of sins and the atoning grace of God. No one else was allowed to enter the Holy of Holies and no one was to touch the Ark. When the Tabernacle moved, the Ark was covered and carried by the rods. The Levites were the special tribe to receive the honour of carrying the Ark of the Covenant each time the Israelites moved. The Ark was a symbol of God's presence and power. Eg. when the Isralites wanted to cross the river Jordan, the Priests stepped in the water while carrying the Ark, and the waters parted and they crossed on dry ground. (Joshua 3)
